History of Franklin Township
The origins of the city’s name have been a bit unclear in history. For a while, it was unknown if the community was named after the founding father Ben Franklin, or Ben Franklin’s illegitimate son and last Royal Governor of New Jersey, William Franklin. It wasn’t until the year 2000 when the township Council confirmed that the community was indeed named for Ben Franklin.
Franklin Township was very much part of the Revolutionary War’s history as many raiding parties took place along Route 27, an NJ state highway that runs through the town. Similarly, the neighborhood was a huge part of the Civil War as well, as a 22-mile canal ran through the town, providing a route of travel from New York to Philadelphia. This canal allowed for hundreds of thousands of freight to be transported, providing a great economic boom for the area.
