BOTOX® Cosmetic is a non-invasive injectable treatment designed to weaken the muscles that contribute to frown lines, deep forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, and platysmal bands along the neck. Muscles contract to form expressions, and these repetitive movements can often create fine lines and facial folds over time. BOTOX® Cosmetic can minimize muscle over-activity, reducing the appearance of these common signs of aging. Wrinkles caused by other factors, such as sun damage, excess skin, and/or gravity do not typically respond to BOTOX® injections.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is not intended to create a “frozen” appearance, and it takes a skilled injector to apply the formula effectively. When administered appropriately, BOTOX® injections can often soften lines and create natural-looking, youthful results.
Though simple in appearance, BOTOX® injections are as much an art as a science. The procedure should be performed by a top facial plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Eugenie Brunner. It is essential to locate the appropriate muscles and accurately administer the cosmetic injectable to optimize results and minimize potential side effects. As a mild neurotoxin, BOTOX® Cosmetic temporarily inhibits the transmission of the neuromuscular signals, which reduces the muscles’ ability to contract and form wrinkles. The effects of BOTOX® injections typically last about four to six months, and “touch-up” treatments will be necessary to maintain results. Regular use can help to soften lines in the long-term as muscles are gradually trained to relax.

The BOTOX® Cosmetic Procedure
BOTOX® Cosmetic has several beneficial applications that extend beyond softening wrinkles, including potentially reducing the frequency and severity of migraine headaches and treating hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) on the hands and underarms. Dr. Brunner can also utilize BOTOX® injections to contour the jawline and cheeks. As a popular non-surgical facial rejuvenation method, BOTOX® Cosmetic is also often combined with other aesthetic enhancements, such as laser skin resurfacing, JUVÉDERM®, or other dermal fillers to optimize results. Dr. Brunner can help patients develop a customized treatment plan using one or several therapies to help achieve their aesthetic goals.

What areas of the face can BOTOX® Cosmetic treat?
BOTOX® Cosmetic can soften wrinkles caused by overactive muscles by pausing contractions in targeted areas. BOTOX® injections can be used to rejuvenate many areas of the face, including the outer eye region (crow’s feet), forehead, and between the brows. Additionally, BOTOX® injections may be administered to other select locations, depending on your unique needs and goals.
How long does treatment take?
The procedure typically will be brief, and most patients can be in and out of the office in about 30 minutes, although your experience may vary. Some individuals like to come in on their lunch break to receive BOTOX® injections, as they can usually return to work immediately after the visit.
Does it hurt?
Your comfort is our highest priority, and we use ultra-fine needles to minimize discomfort and enhance your experience. Most patients report little pain and find the process quick and easy. We can also provide cold compacts or administer a local anesthetic to make the treatment as pleasant as possible.
What are the side effects of BOTOX® injections?
The most common side effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic are minor and include slight bruising, redness, and swelling at the injection sites. These symptoms should fade quickly, and you can apply makeup to cover these concerns or use cold compresses to reduce their appearance, if desired.
What is the recovery process like?
Typically, little to no downtime is necessary for BOTOX® Cosmetic. Side effects are often minor and fade quickly, and most patients feel comfortable returning to work and their regular routine promptly after their treatment.
How soon will I see results?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is fast-acting, and you should be able to see initial effects within a few days to a week, with the full results visible after about two weeks. Many patients plan BOTOX® injections about a week or so before a special occasion, but almost any time can be a good time for non-surgical rejuvenation.
How long do the effects last?
Although temporary, BOTOX® Cosmetic can last between about three and six months. Patients may find that with routine “touch-up” treatments, BOTOX® Cosmetic lasts longer with each procedure. This is due in part to the fact that the targeted muscles are no longer contributing to wrinkle formation.
Does BOTOX® Cosmetic have an age limit?
You must be 18 years of age or older to receive BOTOX® injections. As far as recommended age, that will depend on your unique rate of aging, cosmetic goals, and anatomic indicators. While some people begin to notice signs of aging in their 20s, others may not begin to see fine lines and wrinkles until their 40s. We offer a wide range of facial rejuvenation techniques to suit a comprehensive range of issues that can occur throughout the years. During your initial consultation, Dr. Brunner can guide you toward the optimal approach for your desired result.
What are some additional treatments I may want to consider?
In addition to BOTOX® Cosmetic, dermal fillers like JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, and Sculptra® Aesthetic are another type of cosmetic injectable that can enhance facial youthfulness. Laser skin resurfacing can also aid in revitalizing the skin, improving texture and tone, and addressing specific issues, including hyperpigmentation, which cosmetic injectables cannot address. Dr. Brunner can provide additional information during your visit.
