Microneedling with PRP
Rejuvenating the face continues to be a top priority for people of all ages, whether it’s to minimize fine lines, improve texture, correct pore size, or treat acne scars. Addressing all these issues might require several different treatments, but microneedling with PRP is a good place to start.
Eugenie Brunner, MD, FACS provides the latest cosmetic laser treatments so patients can leave her Princeton, New Jersey office with natural, beautiful results that meet their personal needs and goals. As a double-board certified dermatologist, Dr. Brunner performs all procedures herself, including microneedling with PRP, also known as the “Vampire Facial.”
What is Microneedling with PRP?
Microneedling with PRP, also known as the “Vampire Facial,” is a facial rejuvenation technique that uses the platelets from a patient’s own blood to treat fine lines, uneven skin texture, enlarged pores, and acne scars. The platelets in the blood are rich in growth factors, which stimulate healing and rejuvenation within the dermal structure. PRP is also used in orthopedics to support and accelerate the healing of some injuries.
First, a small amount of blood is drawn from the patient—usually from the arm—which is then spun down in a centrifuge to extract the collagen-stimulating serum and platelets found within the blood. These factors make platelet-rich plasma or PRP, which is then microneedled into the deeper dermal structure of the face.
A microneedling treatment creates tiny injuries to the skin to stimulate the skin’s natural healing processes. This triggers collagen production, a natural substance found in the dermal structure that keeps skin firm, voluminous, and youthful. The combination of this technique with PRP increases the results that can be achieved.
Benefits of Microneedling with PRP
A Microneedling with PRP can achieve the following results:
- Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
- Minimize pore size
- Tighten the skin
- Produce new collagen
- Stimulate production of new elastic fibers
- Improve skin texture
Microneedling alone stimulates collagen production, but adding PRP to a treatment will enhance the facial rejuvenation results of the session. PRP injections after the microneedling treatment will further stimulate collagen production, tighten the skin, reduce pore size, and smooth wrinkles.
The platelets in PRP are a component of blood that works to trigger the body’s healing reaction to injuries or trauma by clotting. When a platelet enters an injury, it releases growth factors and cytokines. The body reacts by creating new collagen and other cells to accelerate the healing process. According to clinicaltrials.gov, by sparking this reaction in the skin of the face, this natural process can stimulate new collagen growth right where you want it so your face can appear smoother, firmer, and more youthful.
How Microneedling with PRP Works
Microneedling and PRP work together to rejuvenate the skin and give patients a fresh appearance. Topical numbing cream is applied to the face to ensure patient comfort throughout the procedure. The plasma is applied topically to the skin and then the microneedling process delivers the plasma deep into the dermal structure where it can provide the most benefit. One treatment session takes about 45 minutes.
Who is a Good Candidate for Microneedling with PRP?
The best candidates are patients with the following concerns:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Uneven skin texture
- Enlarged pores
- Mild skin laxity
- Acne scarring
Dr. Brunner will assess you during your consultation to determine whether microneedling with PRP is the right treatment for you.
Microneedling with PRP Recovery
After your treatment session, your face may be red like a mild sunburn. This redness may last 2-3 days. Recovery involves moisturizing for the first several days as your skin may be dry for about a week. You will start to see results in the first week, and results will continue to improve for up to six weeks. Patients may require a series of treatment sessions to achieve optimal results.
Is this treatment painful?
Most patients say a vampire facial is not painful. You may feel minor discomfort, but topical numbing creams and other solutions may be used to minimize discomfort.
Is a Vampire Facial different from a Vampire Facelift?
A vampire facelift adds an additional technique to achieve volume and a lift in the face. During this procedure, PRP is also injected into the deeper dermal layers to increase results further.
Will I need multiple treatments?
For best results, you will need multiple treatments. The number of treatment sessions needed for each patient depends on the health of the skin and the results desired. Some patients need just 2-3 treatments, spaced 6 weeks apart, but most require 3-6 treatments for complete results, also spaced 6 weeks apart.
How long is recovery?
Recovery time depends on how your skin reacts to the treatment. For most people, the treated skin is red for a few hours up to two days. You will want to apply moisturizer regularly as your skin will also be dry. After about a week, your skin will likely be healed, and you will start to see your results developing.
How long will my results last?
Once you have achieved your full results, the improvements should last 6-12 months. Regular sessions will ensure you maintain your healthy glow indefinitely.
